» end of a bookstore
a professor of mine posted this on facebook today, and it’s quite possibly the most disheartening article i’ve read in a long, long while because, hey, that’s my school, what the hell is this downward spiral it’s been on for a while now? the article discusses another professor of mine as well as the [death of] the author series the bookstore hosted, and it’s just so sad, not only in the more sentimental sense of seeing this happen to a university i grew to love but also in the more broad, general sense of what education and academia clearly mean to the administration as demonstrated in their actions over the last few years.
i mean, i got lucky. when i went back to finish up my ba under a new major, i was able to take great classes under great professors. i got to see how irvine was, indeed, a good place to be a student. but, then, there’s all this crap that undercuts what the university could be, and it’s made even worse in my head because, god, irvine has one of the best writing programs in the nation, and the author series was a great thing irvine had, especially with its roster of writers who came out of that program, so, god, what the fuck!
